Machu Picchu
Forest Fire The Institute of Culture (INC) and INRENA said that they could not rule out that the forest fire that started in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu earlier in the week had been caused intentionally. More than 500 brigade members worked for 4 days to extinguish the fire which did not cause any damage the Ancient Citadel of Machu Picchu or affect tourist services in the area. More than 150 hectares of vegetation was devastated by the fire. Jorge Zegarra, director of the INC, announced that a campaign of reforestation of the affected area would be initiated in the next few days. |
