THE TEMPLE OF THE SUN
  

Next to the main fountain stands the Temple of the Sun which boasts some of Machu Picchu’s most exquisite stonework. Probably an astronomical observatory, the tower has several niches for placing offerings and a large rock in the centre, aligned with the sun’s first rays on the morning of the June solstice.
