THE FUNERARY STONE
Close to the open-fronted hut is a curiously carved
rock called the Funerary Stone that some historians believe was used as a
sacrificial altar, given that the Incas were prone to sacrificing llamas.
Bingham himself believed that it may have been used as a mortuary slab where the
deceased were laid out in the sun before mummification. In the Upper Cemetery
just above this rock, Bingham found a significant number of skeletons.
